Many people play scratchcards for the hopes of winning top prizes. There are very few people who have managed to actually win the biggest prizes offered by scratchcards, and even fewer who have managed this feat more than once.
An American woman playing scratchcards has won an astonishing FOUR TIMES during the past 20 years, winning $20.4 million overall. Joan Ginther, a maths professor from Texas, won all four times from playing the Texas Lottery’s high stakes scratchcard games. The first time was in 1993, then in 2006, 2008 and finally in 2010, when she spent $50 on a scratchcard that won her $10 million, the largest prize ever won on a Texas Lottery scratchcard.
Some journalists have questioned if this streak of winning can be completely random – a professor of statistics in Cambridge cited the winner’s math skills as a possible explanation to her calculating which number might be underneath the scratch layer. He added that Prof. Ginther had a deal with the store owner of a convenient shop in a gas station in her native town of Bishop, Texas, to keep batches of high-stake scratchcards aside, and allow her to inspect them to detect possible winning cards.
Another article interviewed a “lottery expert” who had a different view: “As far as I know, there’s no way to beat the odds with scratch-offs”, she said. Either way, Prof. Ginther has long left her hometown in favor of Las Vegas, the home of successful gambles.
